When we were first
presented with this reflection I really did not know what to think, I am not
the best writer, and the idea of experimenting with a new style of writing
(blogging) that I had never dealt with before, was a little daunting. Obviously
college is about trying new things but I was at least hoping to get accustomed
to college before all I was approached with the new skills I would need to
acquire. Kidding aside, this turned out to be another one of the prime examples
where my nerves and discontentment got the best of me and my original
inclinations turned out to be wrong.
This
was another assignment where I broadened my interests, got out of my comfort
zone, and actually enjoyed writing some of the pieces. Like most people, I like
reflecting on enjoyable experiences in my life such as my various English
classes. Whenever I get the opportunity to reflect on recent memories and think
of gratifying instances, I am usually pleased with the assignment and my end
result. What I think is especially interesting about coming up with ideas for
the Unit 1 Assignment is that, I didn’t even think about talking about my past
English classes, until I read and listened to different authors work. Once I
did this, wrote the reflections and had more time to digest what the author was
trying to say, I discovered a direct correlation to a story that I could tell.
Once I came up with my idea, it was very easy to get my ideas down on paper;
this was a topic that isnt difficult to talk about because most people have
their own opinions.
It is no secret
that I centered my Unit 1 Assignment on the idea of “finding your voice.” I
really like the idea of “finding your voice,” because it really applies to many
situations beyond just writing. For example you could say that I am trying to
find my voice on the campus of Syracuse University. As many freshmen are, I am
still trying to find my “group” of friends and I keep experimenting with
different clubs and activities to see what I really like! Through out these
first four weeks I am trying to figure out where I belong and the right place
to fit in. In a way this is just like trying to “find your voice” in writing or
music. This is the beauty about writing; writing can be looked at and discussed
well beyond the specific work in front of you. Each and every blog, story,
essay has its own captivating aspect that will draw the reader in, and expand
the conversation.
With every
assignment we were given whether it would be a reading or listening to the
interview I had my own take off the message of what the author was trying to
say. My theory towards each and every piece may have been wrong or right but I
think that’s one of the cool things about this type of assignment. Everyone is
entitled to his or her own opinion, and there isn’t one concrete right or wrong
answer.
