Don't Get Rid of Pencils Just Yet! 9/08/15

It is amazing how times have changed; once new technology is invented people are lining up to get it. Everyone wanted a computer because it was seen as a helpful and necessary tool. It is amusing that now there are people forming groups against the use of computers. Granted, I believe there are many pros and cons to the computer but I also believe that writing is very important and the computer should not diminish writings role.
In my eyes, computers are used more for convenience and less for effect. For example, if someone were to write a 15 page term paper about the Civil War I would think the majority of people would write it on a computer. However, if I were to write a thank you note writing a letter sends a much better message than an email on a computer.  “The written language takes on a life of its own, and it even begins to influence how the spoken language is used.”[1] I really enjoyed this quote and I agree with it completely. Written work has an added touch, which makes it more exciting and enjoyable to read. There is also a huge difference between turning a page with angst and/or and excitement as opposed to scrolling down.
The majority of people would be more excited to receive a hand-written note than an email. Even if email is identical to a hand-written note enclosed in a letter, written work is just more enjoyable to read.
There are also many benefits to using a pencil without an eraser. I think that scratching out mistakes, in many situations, is much better than erasing because you can see improvement in your work and you are able to see where you stand. For example, erasing has been forbidden in lab notebooks in science classes that I have taken. Science, similar to writing, is all about failing and trying again. Hardly anyone gets their work right the first time; a benefit of a pencil is you can truly see how you started and progressed, as opposed to a computer where with a click of a button your work is deleted.
I am not saying writers shouldn't use computers. I just think that people shouldn't rule out at least starting off with a pencil and paper and seeing how the piece begins. In my opinion writing seems to be a much more creative process then using a computer.
